Renew Driver’s License

No matter what state you reside in, you must renew your driver’s license regularly in order to remain a legal driver. Each state has different guidelines concerning license renewals so be sure to review the state guidelines.

If you are a licensed driver, most states provide several options to choose from when it comes time to renew your driver’s license. Understand, though, that no matter which method you opt to take, most renewals in the state are valid for four years. Generally, when there are 90 days remaining until the expiration of your license the DMV or similar state service will mail you a renewal reminder. Whether you choose to renew your license online, by mail, or in person is up to you.

How to Renew Your License Online

In order to renew your license online, there are several requirements that you must be able to check off. First, your license must not have an out-of-state address printed on it. Next, your current license must include your photo. Your license must not have been expired for more than six months. In most states, if your license has been expired more than six months, you must start the licensing process all over again by applying for an entirely new license. Lastly, the document you received in the mail must say that online renewal is an option. If a new photo or eye exam is required it will note that renewal is only available in person.

If you meet all of the requirements for online renewal, the renewal process is simple. First, you must visit the state website you will be renewing your license in. You will likely be asked for your driver’s license number, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your social security number. After you have entered all of the correct information, the website will prompt you to pay the renewal fee. Each state has different fees and some states give a discounted fee if you are over a certain age. Regardless of how much you are paying, you can do so with a credit card or debit card. Your new license will then be mailed to you.

How to Renew Your License by Mail

If you choose to renew your license by mail, it is best to wait until you receive your renewal reminder in the mail. You then fill out the form and mail it to the address listed on it. Include a check or money order for the correct amount based on your renewal period.

How to Renew Your License in Person

If you choose to renew your license in person, visit your state’s motor vehicle website to find an address. Depending on where you live you may want to consider scheduling an appointment online to save time. In some parts of the country, you can wait for hours to renew a driver’s license.

When going to the DMV be sure to bring your current license as well as another form of id. The additional forms of id may vary by state so be sure to read on your state’s motor vehicle website what the requirements are. Also, be sure to bring a form of payment.
